1) HWH School District “Back to School Rally,” Saturday, August 14, 8:00am to 2:00pm – All Helena-West Helena public school students and their parents must attend the school rally held at Central High School’s Cad Polk Stadium. The school district will provide information packets, entertainment, food, free backpacks, and school supplies for all students. For more information call 870-338-4425.
2) Community Blood Drive, Tuesday, August 17 at Phillips Community College – Donate blood and help save a life. The blood drive is from 1:00pm to 6:00pm at the Phillips Community College Fine Arts Center. For more information call Crystal at 870-572-5475.
3) The Helena-West Helena Fire Department will host “Community Safety Day” August 21 from 8:00am until 2:00pm in the Wal-Mart parking lot – The Fire Department will provide citizens with safety information for their communities and students returning to school. Free school supplies, hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks for all that attend. This is the Firefighters’ way of giving back to the citizens that support the everyday efforts of the Department. 4) Helena Farmers Market “Special Saturday”, August 21 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Court Square Park in Downtown Helena – Fresh produce, baked goods, and free samples from the vendor means fun for the whole family. Do not forget to shop every Friday from now thru October 15 at the Farmers Market. For more information call Tyson at 207-215-1121.
5) 1st Annual Green Expo: Going Green in the Delta, at Phillips Community College August 26 and 27 – The focus of the green expo is efficient energy use. The expo will promote open dialogue about the best practices for a green economy in the Delta. Thursday, August 26 the expo is 5:30pm to 9:00pm and Friday, August 27, 9:00am to 4:00pm. Through speaker presentations, workshops, and the hands-on demonstration projects, participants will learn why going green is important to the community. 6) Helena Regional Medical Center’s Healthy Women Program, Thursday, August 26 – All women are encouraged to attend the Health Fair and Dinner at the Isle of Capri Casino and Resort. The Health Fair is from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and the dinner is from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Isle of Capri Ballroom. Guest speaking at the dinner is author Skyy Banks. 7) Deep South Band presents “Rockin the Night Away for Relay” on August 28 at the Wild Hog Saloon beginning at 8:00pm – The cover charge is $10.00. There will be live music, entertainment, a silent auction, and door prizes. Come have a great time and support the American Cancer Society. For more information call Jeff Steele at 870-338-6451.
8) Southern Gospel recording artist Ivan Parker will perform at the Phillips Community College on Sunday, August 29 at 6:00pm – This special concert event, featuring one of Southern Gospel Music’s most recognizable voices promises to be most memorable. 9) Tri-County Fair, September 6-11 in Marvell – Take the whole family to the Fair on Highway 49 in Marvell. There will be arts and crafts booths, music, entertainment, games, food, and rides all day every day. Monday (Labor Day) is Armband Day which allows you free access to all the rides for the cost of one armband. The Miss County Fair and Jr. Miss pageants are Monday evening. 10) Delta Dayz Art Festival Saturday, September 18 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Court Square Park in Downtown Helena – Sponsored by the Arkansas Delta Arts Partnership, this festival features artists, poetry readings, vendors, and games for children to play. 11) Got an extra room or RV parking spot? Help the Blues Festival and Make Some Money – Have a spare bedroom to rent or space for an RV to park? The Chamber receives requests every day from Blues fans all across the country looking for a place to stay or a place to park their RV during the Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival October 7, 8, and 9. If you are interested in hosting visitors coming to the Blues Festival call the Chamber at 870-338-8327.
